He and She

The way he listened so intensively, as if catching every word she said, saving it in a small place in his mind. The way he sat facing her, putting his heart on her sleeve as if he'd known her his whole Life. His voice was light; her laughter seemed almost uncontrollable, as if brought upon by pure nerves. It was those moments when they just looked into each other's eyes and smiled, because it felt like the right thing to do, so much that they almost didn't even have a choice in the matter.

Driving in the car, just the two of them, sharing their favorite songs, as if trying to reveal the secrets of their hearts through the music, desperately hoping the other one would understand. He laughed when she wasn't even funny, she laughed when she didn't know what else to do. They looked for an excuse, any excuse, to stay together just a moment longer. For the hours they had spent together seemed like minutes, the minutes like seconds, and the seconds like the blink of a heart. He wanted her to understand, she wanted him to be captivated.

It was innocence. It was beautiful. It feels so far away now.

The closer he got, the harder she pushed away because her heart had felt this once before and thought it would lead her to the same place. What she failed to realize is he is not like the paths she's taken before, he's different, but she couldn't see that, she can't see that. Now it's a rare occasion if she will even lock her eyes in his for a second as they speak, is she afraid of what he may see? A girl with pure intentions, oh how she must shutter at the thought of being able to trust such eyes. Though the laughter is inevitable, it's not the same. She finally understands, but it seems as if he is no longer captivated.

Then there's those other moments. Moments of Hope. Glimpses of tenderness.

As he drives fast down the cement path she grabs onto the handle above her, gripping it tightly in her hand.

He turns to her and says, "You can let go, it's ok"

"I don't trust you" she says, with a hint of purposeful intensity in her voice.

"That's fine, I can live with that" he responds as if thinking deeply about his response.

"Can you really?" She asked. They both knew they were no longer speaking of a simple car ride, but the objective at hand, stirring in both of their hearts for weeks.

"For now, yes. In time it will change though" he responds, at last with some hopeful tenderness in his voice.

"I Hope, well you can, but you just don't know you can... yet." and with her words he gave her a glance with a sort of smirk tied to the end of his mouth.

They drove the rest of the way in silence, they knew the truth behind the words that were said, they had a lot to think about.

I don't know the end of this story yet. I'm not done living it.
